Our take
Our take
The Healthy Pet Simply Feed makes sense for a household that wants the same dry-food routine to run each day without a phone, account, or network connection. Its useful combination is a refillable hopper, several scheduled meals, and controls on the feeder itself. It suits a single feeding station better than a household trying to keep different cats on different foods.
The important tradeoff is portion granularity and maintenance. You choose volume increments, then check what those settings actually deliver with your food. Refill and cleaning routines include preparing the conveyor, and the open bowl cannot identify who eats a meal. A cat that shakes feeders for extra kibble is a reason to be cautious: selected owners describe that exact behavior. PetSafe setup · portion troubleshooting · owner account

This review covers PFD00-14574, the US Healthy Pet Simply Feed with an LCD and physical buttons. PetSafe's model-specific support page connects that number to the operating guide. Smart Feed, Six Meal, and rotating five-meal trays are separate products; their app controls, accessories, and feeding behavior do not belong in this review. Model support and manual
PetSafe specifies dry or semi-moist kibble up to 3/4 inch in diameter, a 24-cup hopper, and indoor use. Semi-moist kibble does not mean canned or wet food: the operating guide explicitly excludes those. There is no refrigeration here. Follow your food's storage directions rather than treating hopper capacity as a recommended storage duration. PetSafe support specifications · operating guide, printed page 9
| Decision | Documented answer | What it means at home |
|---|---|---|
| Number of meals | Up to 12 per day, repeating daily | Useful for a regular routine; no weekday/weekend calendar is documented. |
| Meal times | 15-minute steps | A time such as 7:10 cannot be entered exactly. |
| Portion setting | 1/8 to 4 cups in 1/8-cup steps | A cup setting is not a gram measurement. |
| Display units | 12-hour clock: cups; 24-hour clock: milliliters | Changing units does not create weight-based dispensing. |
| Identification | Scheduled delivery into an accessible bowl | The feeder does not allocate food to individual cats. |

Setting it up for the first week
Setting it up for the first week
Allow time to read the controls before the first meal. PetSafe's setup guide estimates about an hour, including preparing and assembling the parts. Clean the removable food-contact parts, let them dry, and follow the illustrated assembly sequence. The belt's divider must align with its arrows, the red conveyor latch must lock, and the hopper's rear chute must sit over the agitator. Those are functional assembly checks, not cosmetic details. Setup guide · assembly instructions
The presets deserve attention. Cat mode serves 1/4 cup at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.; dog mode serves 2 cups at those times. They are convenience presets, not an individualized feeding recommendation. Select usr to enter your intended meals. Write the entire daily schedule down first, including the total amount, then check each entry on the feeder. Finish programming by holding the center button for five seconds. Scheduling instructions
Before relying on the schedule, watch it deliver a meal and watch your cat approach the bowl. Leave enough space for comfortable head access and an easy retreat. Check that food reaches the bowl, that your cat eats from it, and that another animal does not take over the station. This is a practical household check, not a claim that every cat needs the same training period.
Portions: prepare the conveyor, then measure your food
Portions: prepare the conveyor, then measure your food
The feeder meters food with a compartmented conveyor; it is not a scale. Priming fills its sections with food. PetSafe says to do this after every refill. Its dedicated priming instructions say to unlock with center + up, enter Pause with down, then hold center + left until the motor starts. Return any priming output to the hopper and cancel Pause. Keep that output separate from a portion check. PetSafe priming instructions
Priming is preparation, not calibration to a gram target. The operating guide acknowledges that food type can affect the delivered portion. No documented weight sensor or user gram-calibration routine was established in the sources reviewed. Operating guide, printed page 19
For a useful check, use the same recipe you plan to feed, tare a collection bowl on a gram scale, and record several normal scheduled deliveries at the intended setting. Note the setting, food, individual readings, and hopper condition. Compare the spread as well as the average. Repeat after changing food or settings; keep setup output out of the measurements. Our portion-measurement guide explains the distinction between cup settings and measured mass.
Do not repeatedly press Immediate Feed to generate samples: that function advances the schedule. Use normal scheduled meals and collect them before offering the food. If output is wrong, first check for an unprimed or misaligned belt, debris, and duplicate meal entries. PetSafe identifies each as a possible cause. Simply increasing the programmed amount can hide a setup problem. Portion troubleshooting
The 1/8-cup minimum is also a real planning constraint. If your intended meal is smaller, this model cannot select it directly. More frequent meals still need to fit the intended daily total; the available increments should not determine how much your cat is fed.
Daily controls that can change the next meal
Daily controls that can change the next meal
Slow Feed spreads larger meals over approximately 15 minutes. The operating guide applies the setting across scheduled meals, rather than assigning it to individual meals. It cannot subdivide a 1/8-cup meal because that is already the smallest delivery increment. Enable it with the left button after unlocking; the turtle icon confirms the setting. Treat it as a dispensing option, not evidence of a medical benefit or a promise that your cat will eat slowly. Slow Feed support · operating guide, printed page 15
Immediate Feed delivers the next scheduled meal early and moves the display to the following meal. It does not add an extra serving while preserving that upcoming delivery. PetSafe also blocks consecutive immediate meals until the meal-after-next has run on schedule. Check the next displayed meal after using it. Immediate Feed support
Pause suspends scheduled delivery until you cancel it; it is useful during maintenance. Before walking away after a refill, confirm Pause is off and the unit is back in Operating Mode. Locked controls can be released with center + up. Setup guide, Features
Power and offline use
Power and offline use
Four alkaline D cells power the feeder; batteries and the wall adapter are separate purchases. There is no app setup in the documented workflow. The current US adapter listing says mains can be the primary source and installed batteries can provide backup; the operating guide says the same. A router outage therefore adds no network dependency to this model's local schedule. Product support · current PetSafe adapter
Keep a written schedule for battery replacement or complete power loss. The programming guide sends the user through time setup after new batteries or power loss, and the manual describes removing power for ten seconds to return to initial setup. Check and re-enter time and meals when prompted; do not assume settings survive an unpowered interval. No guaranteed outage runtime was established. Programming guide · operating guide, printed page 16
PetSafe's clock-drift troubleshooting recommends fresh non-rechargeable alkaline D cells and indoor, climate-controlled use. Check the clock if meals become late, and recheck it when changing daylight saving time. Timing support
For the broader distinction between internet loss and power loss, see automatic cat feeders without Wi-Fi. Battery backup supports the mechanism; it does not confirm a delivered or eaten meal.
Cleaning: allow time for the belt to dry
Cleaning: allow time for the belt to dry
PetSafe recommends cleaning before refilling. Pause delivery before disassembly and unplug an attached AC adapter before removing parts, following the operating guide's electrical precautions. The base and control panel stay out of water. Cleaning support · operating guide, printed pages 2–3
| Part | Cleaning boundary |
|---|---|
| Stainless-steel bowl, bowl holder, hopper, lid | Dishwasher-safe; the US product page specifies the top rack. |
| Conveyor and crumb catcher | Hand wash in cool or warm soapy water; rinse and fully air-dry. No conveyor dishwasher cycle or hot water. |
| Base and control panel | Wipe as directed; do not immerse. |

Remove trapped crumbs from the belt with a small brush. Dry every part before reassembly, check belt alignment and both latches, refill, and use the dedicated priming instructions linked above. Confirm the next meal after leaving Pause. Budget the drying time into your routine so cleaning does not coincide with a meal you are depending on. Cleaning and reassembly support
One older cleaning article gives a different button combination for preparing the belt. The model's manual and dedicated priming article both specify center + left. Use those model-specific priming directions rather than substituting a conflicting shortcut. Priming instructions

Lorena Ávila's review, updated April 8, 2024, raises bowl depth, chute clearance, programming, and kibble noise as practical concerns. It discloses affiliate links or review samples in general, but does not provide a model-specific test duration, food protocol, or quantified portion study. Those observations are prompts to check household fit, not measured results we can transfer to every cat. Ávila's review
We selected nine first-person accounts from three Reddit discussions, two Chewy listings, and that review's comments. This targeted set is not a representative survey; hardware revisions and authenticity are unverified. Chewy labels its five selected accounts as Verified Purchase, which is the retailer's designation. The reports illustrate different outcomes:
- Chewy reviewers MaeLM and Granna3 describe useful routines; Granna3 also struggled with setup. Casey reports slow belt drying, while Bffgirl14 reports extra food access. Chewy accounts, located by author and date
- Reddit contributor Educational_Mall_993 reports years of trouble-free use followed by a cat bumping out kibble and causing an error that stopped meals. Motorgirl38 separately describes a cat lifting and dropping a Simply Feed to release food. Long-term account · lifting-and-dropping account
- Reddit contributor bpw1009 reports satisfactory use in a dental-kibble discussion and stresses loading the conveyor; recipe size and model label are unverified. Kristine, on Chewy's adapter page, reports testing a switch to battery power. Kibble discussion · adapter account
- Commenter Eric reports that a 1/8-cup meal came out at once despite Slow Feed. That matches PetSafe's documented minimum-increment limitation. Eric's June 3, 2020 comment
These accounts support checking your own cat's behavior and allowing maintenance time. They cannot tell us how often the feeder jams, how long a typical unit lasts, or whether a current unit will keep a precise gram target. We do not adopt owner modifications, outdoor use, rechargeable batteries, or forced drying as care instructions.
Reasons to consider it—and reasons to choose differently
Reasons to consider it—and reasons to choose differently
Reasons it may fit: onboard scheduling removes phone setup from a fixed routine; a hopper avoids manually filling a separate compartment for every meal; larger meals can use Slow Feed; removable food-contact parts make the cleaning boundaries clear. These are documented features translated into household benefits. Setup · specifications · Slow Feed
Tradeoffs: 1/8-cup portion steps and quarter-hour timing may not match your desired routine; the smallest portion cannot use Slow Feed as a sequence of smaller drops; the belt needs preparation and hand washing; adapter and batteries add to the purchase; the bowl is accessible to other pets. If your cat attacks dispensers, the selected tampering accounts matter more than a broad “pet-proof” marketing claim.

| Your priority | Alternative approach | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| You want to measure every dry meal yourself | PetSafe 5 Meal PFD11-13707 | Five prefilled compartments: one open immediately and four later timed meals. It needs tray refilling instead of hopper metering. |
| A served meal should open for an identified pet | Standard SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder | Microchip-controlled bowl access, including wet or dry food; you portion and refill the food. It is not a scheduled hopper dispenser. |

Purchase and ongoing costs
Purchase and ongoing costs
On October 9, 2026, PetSafe's US PFD00-14574 page displayed $95.99. Its current compatible adapter page, PAC00-15478, displayed $13.49. These are listing observations before tax and any shipping charge, not checked-out totals; confirm current fulfillment before buying. The older operating guide names adapter PAC00-15035; use the current product-specific listing rather than assuming the two part numbers describe identical hardware. Feeder listing · current adapter listing
Batteries, electricity when using the adapter, and occasional replacement parts are cost factors. No verified battery purchase price or household replacement interval supports an annual total here. Neither a large hopper nor a battery-life estimate measures the length of time a cat can be left without care.
The optional ZAC19-17079 two-pet splitter has a privacy panel and an additional bowl. PetSafe's page displayed $21.99; confirm current fulfillment before buying. It markets an equal split, but the two bowls still share one schedule and food supply. For compatibility, the attachment lowers the listed kibble diameter limit to 1/2 inch. It does not recognize animals or enforce separate diets. PetSafe splitter listing

Questions that matter before buying
Questions that matter before buying
Can it dispense an exact gram amount?
It offers volume increments. Measure your intended food and setting across several scheduled deliveries; the readings describe that setup. The manufacturer instructions do not establish a selectable gram target or a universal grams-per-cup conversion.
Does it need Wi-Fi, and can it keep feeding in a power cut?
Programming is on the feeder. PetSafe documents installed batteries as backup when using its adapter. Usable batteries and a prepared, filled mechanism still matter; total power loss calls for checking time and schedule.
Can two cats use it?
They can reach the bowl, and the optional splitter provides two bowls. That does not establish who eats how much. For separate diets or unequal portions, choose an access-control arrangement or separate supervised stations.
What if the bowl is empty or a meal is late?
Check the food supply, Pause, Operating Mode, clock, priming, and assembly before changing the portion. F01 indicates a jammed motor; F02 indicates a switch or motor error. PetSafe advises checking assembly/cleaning for F01 and alkaline batteries/cleaning for F02, then contacting support if help is needed. A cleared error is not proof that a missed meal was replaced. F01 support · F02 support · timing support
Will it stop early-morning begging or prevent food theft?
Some selected accounts describe a useful morning routine; others describe extra food access. Those outcomes depend on the household. Watch your cat's first scheduled meals and attempts to manipulate the feeder before deciding it suits your routine.
Verdict
Verdict
Choose the Simply Feed when you want a regular dry-food schedule controlled on the device and are willing to check portions and maintain its conveyor. Choose a different approach when you need smaller selectable meals, wet-food storage, pet identification, or remote meal confirmation. The strongest supported recommendation is for a fixed routine at one accessible feeding station, with people still checking food delivery, pet access, and care.
The remaining uncertainties are food-specific gram consistency, current hardware changes, real household backup duration, and the prevalence of tampering or mechanical problems. The selected evidence supports practical fit advice, not a numerical score or a guaranteed outcome.
