Short answer: On the PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed (model PFD00-14574), Slow Feed spreads each scheduled meal’s release across 15 minutes. It changes the dispensing pace, not the meal amount you set. It may suit an owner looking to slow the arrival of kibble, but it is not one-piece-at-a-time feeding, a smaller-portion setting, or a promise about how quickly a pet will eat. The minimum meal is 1/8 cup, and PetSafe says Slow Feed cannot split that minimum further.
What owners are asking
One owner asked about an automatic feeder with a slow-down bowl for a cat that ate quickly. A reply described using the Simply Feed’s Slow Feed option to release a meal in smaller amounts over time, while also distinguishing that from scheduling the same daily amount as more frequent meals. A later question about “very slow” automatic feeders asked for literally one kibble at a time and linked the Simply Feed. The latter thread had no replies when reviewed. These posts show the question owners are trying to answer; they do not establish a health benefit or typical result.
Modes and portion limits
| Choice | What PFD00-14574 does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled meal | Delivers the amount entered for that meal; schedule supports up to 12 meals a day | Does not weigh kibble in grams or guarantee an exact weight for every food |
| Slow Feed | Spreads each scheduled meal over 15 minutes; enabled or removed with the left button (turtle icon shows status) | Does not reduce the selected meal, change the daily total, or promise one piece per release |
| Smaller scheduled meals | Lets you divide a planned daily amount across more meal times, if that schedule fits your plan | Does not make one meal release more slowly |
| Minimum setting | 1/8 cup per scheduled meal; setting increments are 1/8 cup, up to 4 cups | Slow Feed cannot subdivide a 1/8-cup meal into smaller servings |
PetSafe’s model support page identifies PFD00-14574 and links its operating manual. The Slow Feed instructions say the meal is divided and released over 15 minutes, and specifically note the 1/8-cup floor. The programming guide lists up to 12 daily meals, 15-minute schedule increments, and meal settings from 1/8 to 4 cups in 1/8-cup steps. It also says Slow Feed applies to scheduled meals. PetSafe documents toggling the turtle icon with the left button; if the buttons are locked, unlock with ENTER and UP first.
Choose the setting for the job
If your goal is to make one scheduled serving arrive over a longer interval, Slow Feed is the relevant control. PetSafe describes it for pets that eat quickly; that is the maker’s intended-use statement, not evidence that the setting prevents illness or changes eating behavior. It is a 15-minute dispense window, not a slow-feeder bowl: the official instructions do not specify a number of kibble pieces per release, a pause interval between releases, or a way to extend the window. If your pet needs a much slower, piece-by-piece presentation, this mode may not match that request. The later Reddit question illustrates that gap, but no owner answer or comparative test was found.
If your goal is to reduce the meal or daily amount, change the scheduled portion only according to the feeding plan you intend to follow; Slow Feed leaves that setting intact. If your goal is more frequent, smaller meals, program additional meals within the model’s limit and keep the intended daily total in view. The machine’s cup or milliliter settings are volume settings, not a grams scale. Kibble density and the feeder’s delivery can affect the weight represented by a volume setting, so check measured deliveries as described in our automatic-feeder portion-measurement guide. For physical food-size fit, see the kibble compatibility guide.
Slow Feed is a dispensing feature, not a treatment or guarantee against vomiting, gulping, or another health problem. PetSafe’s manual suggests discussing portion and feeding frequency with your veterinarian. If fast eating or vomiting is a concern, ask your veterinarian what feeding approach fits your pet rather than treating this mode as medical advice. For the feeder’s model-specific controls and limits, see the PetSafe Simply Feed review.
