Litter for Automatic Litter Boxes: LR4 and MAX 3 Compatibility

Check LR4 litter restrictions and PETKIT MAX 3 screen choices before changing formula, buying in bulk or assuming every clumping litter fits.

The short answer

Choose by the job you need done.

Choose an exact compatible litter formula before choosing a screen. LR4 guidance favors clay-clumping litter; MAX 3 offers two screen types, with particle-size limits still applying. Material names alone do not establish compatibility.

Exact scope · Litter-Robot 4 and US PUROBOT MAX 3 P9906; PETKIT manual jointly covers P9906/P9911. A compatibility guide, not a ranking of litter brands.

Before buying

A few useful questions.

Does Litter-Robot 4 need Whisker-branded litter?

No. Whisker lists other compatible products; check the exact formula rather than assuming brand-wide approval.[2]

Which MAX 3 sifter suits finer clay litter?

PETKIT identifies Honeycomb P99023 for finer mineral or clay/bentonite particles.[3]

Can the screen make oversized MAX 3 litter acceptable?

No. Follow the particle restrictions in the manual regardless of screen choice.[4]

Setup, limitations and related reading.

Read the bag before the box

Start with your current litter's exact formula, not just its material. Write down whether it clumps, its particle shape and its largest granules. A familiar brand can sell several formulas; a recommendation for one is not permission for all of them.

Our practical starting point is a compatible clumping formula your cat already accepts. Check the device's instructions before ordering a bulk pack. Changing the machine and litter together makes it harder to identify which change is causing a problem.

Litter-Robot 4: separate sifting from sensor readings

Whisker recommends clay-clumping litter and says to stop at the MAX line. Its manual excludes loose-clumping, paper and wood pellets. Small crystals can pass the screen, but translucent or white litter may affect LR4's litter-level and drawer readings. Passing through the screen alone is therefore insufficient. LR4 manual

Whisker's current support list treats tofu by formula: some work, while Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter is listed as unsuitable. Do not generalize this to every tofu litter. Check the actual product name against current guidance or ask support. Compatibility list

MAX 3: match the screen and check the particle limit

PETKIT lists Standard P99022 for larger particles and Honeycomb P99023 for finer mineral/clay litter. This is a screen-selection distinction, not evidence that one delivers lower running costs. US listing

The linked MAX 3 manual excludes granules longer than 12 mm or wider than 3 mm and says not to exceed MAX. A different screen does not waive that limit. Manual, printed page 8

A useful setup log
Record Why keep it?
Exact litter name and formula Avoid buying a similarly named replacement with different particles.
Screen fitted, where interchangeable Keep the configuration consistent when checking a change.
Clean litter appearing in the waste bin A prompt to revisit compatibility and setup, not a measured defect rate.
Clumps remaining in the bed Note the conditions before changing several settings at once.
Fill level before the cycle Separate overfilling from a litter-formula problem.

This log is our suggested troubleshooting method. It does not certify a new litter as compatible. If the result is poor, check the official setup instructions and contact support before continuing to experiment.

Buy a small amount before committing
  1. Confirm the exact formula and model.
  2. Check stated restrictions and the fitted screen.
  3. Keep the first bag label or photograph it for support.
  4. Observe the setup in ordinary use before buying in bulk.
  5. Recheck compatibility after changing formula or accessories.

For the device tradeoffs, see Litter-Robot 4, PUROBOT MAX 3 and our direct comparison. Then plan the cleaning routine and ownership budget. Browse the automatic litter-box category for the current review scope.
