The short answer

If clumps smear or stick, check the exact litter formula, fill level, cycle delay and liner cleanliness before buying another bag. On Litter-Robot 4, a longer delay can help litter that is still wet when the cycle starts. It is not a guaranteed fix for every stuck clump. Whisker’s LR4 delay guidance

Scope: The settings and cleaning instructions below are for Litter-Robot 4. Other automatic boxes need their own manual; LR3, LR4 and PETKIT instructions are not interchangeable.

First, describe the mess

In an August owner discussion, an LR4 owner described repeated sticking despite trying several formulas. A January thread described clumps staying attached after a cycle. Another LR4 discussion included an owner already using a 30-minute delay without success.

These reports identify a useful troubleshooting question, not a failure rate or a winning litter brand. The distinction to record is whether you see wet smears, firm attached clumps, or residue above the litter bed. Photograph the location before cleaning it.

What you notice First check What it does not prove
Wet smear after cycling Current LR4 delay setting That the machine needs replacing
Firm clump remains attached Location, formula and cleaning history That the longest delay will fix it
Litter above the marked line Level when the bed is flat That adding more improves performance
Residue above the litter bed Exact location and a photo for support That a new brand will prevent it

Work through these checks in order

1. Record the starting setup

Write down the model, exact bag name, delay setting and when you last cleaned the globe. Keep the bag label: two products from the same brand may be different formulas. Our approach is to change one thing at a time, then compare notes from ordinary use. That makes a support conversation more useful than a list of everything you changed together.

2. Check the bed, without overfilling

The LR4 manual says to fill to the raised MAX line with the litter spread flat. Do not pile it above that mark. After adding litter, follow the manual’s Reset instruction to zero the weight scale. Record the level before deciding that the formula is responsible. LR4 manual

3. Match the delay to the symptom

Whisker lists a seven-minute default. LR4’s control panel offers 3, 7, 15, 25 and 30 minutes; the app supports settings between 3 and 30 minutes. Its guidance explains that cycling before litter has set can leave sticking or smearing, and identifies 15 minutes as an option for slower-setting clumping litter. Check that the change actually saved. LR4 delay settings

If you already use a long delay and firm clumps remain attached, do not assume another increase is the answer. Keep that observation for support rather than repeatedly cycling the same mess.

4. Confirm the exact formula is supported

Whisker’s compatibility guidance excludes non-clumping, loose-clumping, paper-based and wood-pellet products. Check its current list instead of choosing a Reddit favorite by brand alone. Whisker compatibility guidance

5. Clean the removable globe, then let it dry

Follow Whisker’s full removal sequence: empty the litter, return the globe home, turn the unit off and unplug it before removal. The guide permits water and mild soap for the globe and says to let it dry completely before reassembly. It prohibits bleach inside the globe and submerging, spraying or soaking the electronic base and control panel. LR4 cleaning instructions

Plan regular cleaning and replacement supplies into your ownership budget. Avoid adding a coating just because a comment recommends it; ask support about any proposed treatment for your exact liner.

When to stop troubleshooting

Contact support with the serial number, photos, exact formula and settings if sticking returns after these checks, the liner looks damaged, or the unit shows an error. Ask about the liner before ordering replacement parts. Keep an accessible alternative litter box while the device is unavailable. Do not bypass sensors or reach into a moving globe.

For buying decisions, read the LR4 review and LR4 versus MAX 3 comparison; neither establishes a universal cure for sticking.

Questions owners ask

Is 30 minutes always the best LR4 delay?

No. Whisker ties longer delays to litter needing time to set. An owner’s longest setting is not proof that it suits your setup.

Should I replace the liner immediately?

Start with the checks above. Send support photos before treating sticking alone as proof that the liner has failed.

Do these settings apply to PETKIT MAX 3?

No. Use the exact PETKIT manual and support guidance. A similar symptom does not establish the same cause or remedy.
