Short answer: If the standard SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder does not open for a cat that should be authorized, follow the standard model’s manual in order: clean the hoop sensors, fit four fresh alkaline C batteries correctly, move the feeder away from nearby metal or electrical appliances, and re-learn the cat. If it still fails, consult the manual matching the feeder’s serial number before considering any reset, or contact Sure Petcare. A flashing green light means Learn mode is active; after the cat eats and is learned, the light stays on until the cat leaves. That confirms a successful Learn-mode event, not reliable reading on every later approach.
This is for the standard, non-Connect SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder. Sure Petcare lists the Microchip Pet Feeder and Microchip Pet Feeder Connect as separate products. Connect has Hub/app functions; this guide does not use its app or connectivity troubleshooting.
First separate recognition from a cat’s approach
An owner recently described two SureFeed feeders that reliably opened for one cat but rarely detected another, even after the second cat’s new chip had been read during setup. The post does not identify whether the units were standard or Connect, so it is only a symptom example—not evidence about this exact model or its cause. Read the owner’s question.
| What happens | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The feeder never responds to the authorized cat | Recognition, power, or setup needs checking | Sensors, batteries, interference, then re-learn |
| It reads the cat in Learn mode but later misses approaches | Setup read succeeded once; normal recognition is still unreliable | Confirm the cat puts its head through the hoop; then follow the troubleshooting sequence |
| One cat opens it but another does not | Access and detection may differ by cat | Re-learn each intended pet with other pets kept away; don’t infer the chip is faulty from the light alone |
| The red light flashes every few seconds | The manual identifies low batteries | Replace all four batteries with new alkaline C cells |
The reader activates when a pet places its head inside the front hoop. A cat nosing food from outside may not trigger it. A successful Learn-mode read and a later missed approach are different observations.
Follow the standard-feeder checks
- Clean the hoop sensors. Wipe the feeder as described in its manual and keep the four black sensor points clean. Do not immerse the feeder or put it in a dishwasher. SureFeed manual, cleaning and troubleshooting.
- Replace the batteries as a set. Use four good-quality 1.5V alkaline C cells, correctly oriented. Sure Petcare says the feeder is not designed for rechargeable batteries. A battery swap should not erase the learned chip: the manual says it remains stored in memory.
- Move the feeder away from metal or electrical appliances. The manual recommends this when operation is unreliable. Then retry the usual approach.
- Re-learn the cat. Use the Add Pet button and the manual’s setup sequence. Keep other pets away during learning so the wrong animal is not added. The cat’s head must enter the hoop for the sensors to detect the chip; waving a cat in front of the feeder will not register it. The manual says the feeder supports up to 32 pets.
- Before any reset, check the manual for your feeder’s serial number. Sure Petcare lists separate downloads for serial ranges 1–0400000 and 0400000+. Follow the instructions for your specific unit, or contact Sure Petcare if the fault continues.
A Sure Petcare RFID collar tag is an official alternative if a cat has no chip or it has moved significantly and is hard to read. Ask your vet to check the chip’s function and location if recognition remains inconsistent; a successful scan elsewhere does not identify the fault.
When to contact Sure Petcare
If the authorized cat is still missed after the matching manual’s checks, contact Sure Petcare with the feeder serial number, the cat’s microchip number, the light behavior, which steps you tried, and whether other authorized pets open that same unit. The support page asks customers to have the serial and pets’ chip numbers available and offers model-specific manuals and an enquiry form: Microchip Pet Feeder support. Don’t open the casing or try undocumented button combinations.
For product context, see our SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder review, RFID vs. microchip feeder guide and feeders for two cats. If your main problem is that a nervous cat avoids the moving lid, use the separate cat training guide; it covers acclimation, not chip recognition.
What does green mean during learning? Flashing green means Learn mode is active. After the cat has eaten and been learned, the light stays on until the cat leaves. This confirms that Learn-mode event only; it does not promise perfect reads on later approaches.
