Quick answer: A filter change or fresh refill does not clean the tank, water path or pump area. If your fountain feels slippery, empty it and clean the permitted components using its exact instructions. Check the rotor, shaft and filter tray before assuming the motor has failed. Keep a clean bowl of fresh water available while the fountain is out of service.

Why a clean-looking tray can be misleading

The useful question is not just “How often did I change the water?” It is “Which surfaces did I actually clean?” The underside of the tray, filter housing and pump cavity need separate attention. Appearance alone cannot identify a microorganism or establish whether a residue is dangerous.

Owners describe this gap in a CatAdvice discussion about slime despite water changes, a cats thread about an awkward pump cavity, and a Catownerhacks discussion about motor crevices. These are individual experiences across different fountains, not a failure-rate study or evidence against a particular current model.

Start with this quick check

What you notice Check first What it does not establish
Slippery tank or tray Empty it; clean accessible surfaces and corners A new filter alone will solve it
Debris around the water path Filter tray, permitted removable covers and passages The motor is defective
Dockstream 2 noise or slow drainage Water level, clogged filter/tray and a level surface More power is the answer
Buildup you cannot reach Exact-model disassembly instructions; manufacturer support It is safe to pry open a sealed housing

The Dockstream noise checks above come from PETLIBRO's model-specific troubleshooting. Slime and weak flow may occur together, but one observation does not diagnose the other.

Clean by component: Dockstream 2 PLWF106 example

These boundaries apply to the plug-in Dockstream 2 Smart Fountain PLWF106, not automatically to the cordless PLWF116 or older Dockstream models. PETLIBRO identifies them separately in its series comparison.

  1. Disconnect power and separate the base. PETLIBRO says the base is not water-resistant: never rinse or submerge it. Keep it away from the sink while handling the washable parts.
  2. Clean the tray assembly within its limits. The stainless drinking tray and filter tray are integrated. PETLIBRO permits dishwasher cleaning below 194°F/90°C, with a recommended maximum cycle of one to two hours, excluding the filter lid. Other permitted washable parts are hand-washed below 122°F/50°C. See the component-specific answer.
  3. Give the pump area its own check. The maker directs owners to remove the rotor cover and inspect the shaft inside the tank. Its maintenance guidance names the rotor, shaft, white filters and black foam filter. Use gentle pressure with a small brush: the shaft is delicate. Follow the official pump tutorial and support index for the actual removal sequence; do not improvise with a blade. Pump inspection guidance.
  4. Replace and reset deliberately. PETLIBRO recommends filters every two weeks for one pet, more frequently for multiple pets, plus an interior wipe weekly. Resetting the reminder records maintenance; it does not perform it. Clean visible buildup when found rather than waiting for a countdown. Filter and cleaning guidance.

Use the cleaning method for your exact model

A soak approved for one fountain is not permission for another. PetSafe's slime instructions for its Drinkwell ½-, 1- and 2-gallon fountains specify disassembly, cleaning crevices and the impeller cavity, and thorough rinsing. That page also gives a particular vinegar soak; we would not transfer its chemical instructions to the PLWF106 or PETKIT. PetSafe instructions.

Our dishwasher-safe parts guide explains why material, model and component all matter. A stainless top is not proof that every attached part tolerates the same cleaning method.

Repair the routine or replace the fountain?

Our view: try the documented cleaning and assembly checks before buying another device. If access is consistently too awkward for your routine, prioritize reachable water paths, clear disassembly instructions and available replacement parts over another headline feature. Ask support about persistent flow problems or damaged components; do not repeatedly force a stuck rotor.

Compare the Dockstream 2 profile, EverSweet Max 2 profile and direct comparison for the different ownership routines. This cleaning example does not establish PETKIT instructions or a hygiene winner.

Questions owners ask

Will replacing the filter remove existing slime?

It does not wash the tank or pump area. Check both cleaning and filter replacement in your model's instructions.

Does weak flow mean the pump is dead?

Not necessarily. Dockstream 2 support includes inspection and reassembly checks; its noise guidance also identifies low water and filter/tray blockage. Persistent trouble needs model-specific support.

Can I identify the problem by its color?

No. A photograph or color description is not a reliable identification. Treat visible residue as a cleaning prompt, not a diagnosis.
